Common dryer problems we fix
- Runs but no heat. On electric dryers, a blown heating element, a failed thermal fuse, or a bad thermostat. On gas dryers, the igniter or gas valve coils. The no-heat call is the most common dryer repair and usually an affordable one.
- Takes forever to dry. Almost always restricted airflow: a clogged lint path, a crushed or blocked vent hose, or a partially blocked exterior vent. Sometimes a weak heating element. This one is often cheap and also a fire-risk fix worth doing.
- Will not turn / drum not spinning. A snapped drive belt, a worn idler pulley, or a seized drum roller. The belt is a common, inexpensive fix.
- Will not start, no power. A door switch, a thermal fuse, or the start switch.
- Loud thumping or squealing. Worn drum rollers, a glazed idler pulley, or a bad blower wheel.
- Burning smell. Stop using it. Usually lint built up near the heating element or a failing motor, both a fire risk. Unplug and call.
- Shuts off after a few minutes. A failing motor overload or a venting/airflow problem tripping the safety.

Repair or replace a dryer?
Dryers are among the most repair-worthy appliances. They last 8 to 12 years and the common failures, elements, fuses, belts, igniters and rollers, are inexpensive relative to a new machine. It is rare that repairing a dryer does not make sense inside its normal lifespan. If yours is 15-plus years old and needs a motor, we will talk replacement, but most dryer repairs are an easy yes.
The venting point that matters in Vaughan
The single biggest cause of "my dryer takes forever" and of dryer fires is a clogged lint path and vent. In Vaughan homes with a long or vertical vent run to an exterior wall, lint accumulates fast, and in winter the exterior flap can ice up and restrict airflow further. If your dryer is slow, the fix is often clearing the vent rather than a part, and we will check that first instead of selling you an element you do not need. Ask us to inspect the full vent run while we are there.
Do this before you call
- Clean the lint filter and check whether the exterior vent flap opens freely.
- Confirm the dryer has power; electric dryers use a 240V circuit, so one tripped half of a double breaker gives you a drum that turns with no heat.
- For gas dryers, confirm the gas supply is on.
- Note whether it is no-heat, no-spin, or slow-drying; those point to completely different parts.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my dryer not heating?
Electric dryers usually lose heat to a burned-out element, a blown thermal fuse or a bad thermostat; gas dryers to the igniter or the valve coils. It is the repair we see most on dryers and it is generally light on the wallet, roughly $150 to $350.
Why does my dryer take so long to dry?
Nearly always airflow: a packed lint path, a kinked or crushed vent hose, or an outdoor vent flap frozen or blocked shut. Clearing it usually solves the drying time and takes away a real fire risk. Now and then it is an element on its way out.
Is it worth repairing a dryer?
Generally yes. With an 8-to-12-year lifespan and cheap common parts, a dryer is worth fixing unless it is well up in years and facing a big-ticket part like a motor.
Do you repair gas dryers?
Yes, gas and electric both. On a gas dryer that will not heat, the igniter or the gas valve coils are the usual suspects.
My dryer smells like burning, what should I do?
Stop the machine and unplug it. The smell is usually lint sitting near the element or a motor beginning to fail, and both can start a fire. Call and we will move you to the front of the line.
